Concert Review: TRV$ DJ-AM
Monday, May 18, 2009 at 11:24AM In addition to the already stellar Weenie Roast lineup, KROQ added TRV$ DJ-AM as a last minute guest headliner. The duo, which has been elevated to mega-stardom after their unfortunate accident, wasn’t exactly a true KROQ band. They play dance music, and most of the KROQ fans are into mainstream rock. I felt that a lot of the crowd was excited to see “The drummer from Blink 182” and that other guy. Nevertheless TRV$ DJ-AM played one of the most entertaining sets of the night.
You always hear of face melting guitar solos, but has anyone ever heard of face melting DJ sets? Well, I experienced one that night. Starting off with Guns N Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle”, they quickly transitioned into The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” By this point in time they seemed to have won over the whole crowd. A crowd that listens to music that is usually hard to dance to, was collectively dancing their asses off. I couldn’t help dancing as I stood in the photo pit snapping shots.
The set got interesting when AM would play tracks from artists like Justice, and half of the crowd would be confused while the other half was going nuts. He seemed to keep a solid balance between the dance world that he hails from and the rock world that Travis Barker came from. While AM was spinning Biggie Smalls’ “Juicy” they were joined onstage by Warren G who performed “Regulate.”
The most amazing part of a TRV$ DJ-AM show is the fact that Travis Barker drums for an hour straight without breaks. As soon as the first note hit he started drumming, and didn’t stop until the end of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Which closed out the set. As the set progresses, Travis drums to songs from artists such as Guns N Roses and AC/DC.
TRV$ DJ-AM were the perfect artist to close out the show that night. They played a really solid set, and hopefully opened some of those KROQ ears to new genres of music. The crowd seemed disappointed that Blink 182 didn’t come onstage after TRV$ DJ-AM finished, but as I walked out of the venue that night no one was complaining about it. If you haven’t seen TRV$ DJ-AM perform live yet, make sure you get out to a show as soon as you can.
